An age old discussion, gone far off track from the original post. What I'll write here is not my vision how Eve should be. It is my opinion and my opinion alone.
Missions have come a long way from the time I started doing then back in 2003/2004. And they've become quite a bit better and more challenging. Are they challenging? Not to me when I pay attention to the mish and not mess up the triggers. Do I want them to be more challenging? Perhaps, but always. Got a job in an ever changing environment where I need to make decisions about where to go now and what to do next. I play games to wind down, I play Eve to relax. And missions do that for me, no hassle, no fuss.
I've read a few folks writing "If you want PvE, don't play Eve", or "Why do you play Eve anyway?! It's a MMOG, you must socialize". I've always loved space sims, got hooked back to Privateer and Wing Commander on the old C64. This game reminds me off that. It's spaceships, it's getting better stuff to put on my spaceship. That's what pulls me to this game.
Folks tell me PvE is boring! There's no challenge. Sorry, the current state of PvP is boring to me. Gate camping, blob warfare, running when there's a challenging opponent whom you might not win from, engaging only that what you can beat (yes, I know there's the odd exception). Where is that more exciting than PvP? Most PvP I've come across has just been that: getting a quick gank to post on a killboard... "Oh we're such cool PvP'ers".
Do missions need a loot nerf? I think so - just wished I knew that before I started training Metallurgy as req. for Scrapmetal Processing. Minerals are silly from mish loot. Do missions of level 4 need to go to low-sec? Only if those who fancy PvP'ing me there suffer the same odds: NPC's who start targetting them as well as me. As well as some better odds to not face a gank squad with not so much a chance to fight back.
Overal I think CCP has done a good job in trying to balance the PvP vs PvE crowd. They are completely different and CCP tries to cater to both sides. When they finally get the PvP to a degree that it is a bit more challenging than who brings more ships to the field, and more about tactics and ship setup, I guess you'll find me doing that again. 'Till that time I'll just be mucking about in Empire.
I play a game to have fun, when it's no longer fun I stop playing. That goes - I hope - for all of you. And my fun might not be your fun, which goes both ways. Thank CCP for that, it'd be quite a boring game if we all thought we all needed the same fun.
